Not everyone with an interest in, or passion for, any form of motorsport will be able to compete. Money, time or even ability are just some of the factors that may prohibit it. But there are other ways to get involved. Car Clubs up and down the country are always on the look out for willing helpers, they being of more use (and much rarer) than those who are forced into helping! The help could be in the form of organising events, or marshalling on events. Without either organisers, competitors, officials or marshals there would be no events, but the latter form the bulk of the required voluntary help on any event, particularly in rallying where lots of marshals are required to man stages, service areas, etc. Often seen as a bit of a thankless task, it nevertheless is very much appreciated by both organisers and competitors, and it is a great way to meet like-minded people and get to know more about the sport. Marshalling duties on the Scottish Championship alone can take you to and through some beautiful areas the length and breadth of the country. Most event web sites will contain contact details of a Chief Marshal or someone else responsible for the gathering of marshals for their event.
Check out the website of the sport's governing body, the Motor Sports Association for more information on how to get involved in marshalling and details on the nationwide Marshalling scheme designed to recruit and train the next generation of marshals. |
